John B. Goetz, an award-winning book designer, died on October 5, 2006. A native of Natchez, MS, Goetz began his design career in New York City in the late 1940’s, after serving as an officer in the Navy during World War II (Bronze Star). His book design work continued at the University of California Press and the University of Chicago Press during the 1950’s and 1960’s. Goetz also worked as managing editor of the American Dental Assoc; later he formed his own book design and production company. Throughout his career Goetz was active in professional organizations such as the Book Clinic and the Caxton Club in Chicago. During his struggle with a diagnosis of probable Alzheimer’s disease, Goetz maintained his respect for and delight in books. Goetz is survived by three children, Charles, Christopher, and Karen, and their families and by his longtime best-friend Mary Konstant. Goetz donated his body to science and requested no funeral or memorial service. A remembrance card designed in his honor will be sent to family and friends.
