– Shakira will donate the proceeds from a concert in her Colombian hometown of Barranquilla to build an arts school for 1,800 children forced to flee their homes by Colombia’s civil war. The concert, part of the pop diva’s worldwide “Oral Fixation” tour, is scheduled for Nov. 15. The bilingual school will bear the name of Shakira’s Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet) Foundation and have an emphasis on arts education, the foundation said Thursday in a statement.
– Legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent slipped and fell Friday outside a Paris restaurant, suffering slight scratches. Saint Laurent, who turned 70 in August, was resting at home after his fall. In 2002, the designer announced his retirement and the closing of the Paris-based haute couture house he founded 40 years earlier, a decision mourned in the fashion world as the end of an era.
– Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were in Pune, India, on Friday, reportedly preparing to shoot scenes for their movie on the life of slain journalist Daniel Pearl, “A Mighty Heart.” Jolie is playing Pearl’s widow, Mariane; Pitt is a producer for the film. Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter, was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan in 2002 while researching a story on Islamic militancy.
