Erwin Gruen, born in Berlin, Germany in 1918, renowned iron worker, Erwin Gruen immigrated to Chicago in 1951. After apprenticing at A&E Forge, he purchased property at 226 West Superior, which became his workshop and art gallery where he helped pioneer the “River North” gallery district. His superbly crafted hand-forge, wrought iron furniture was sought after by Chicago’s finest designers. Gruen is survived by his longtime companion June Travis Friedlob and many loyal friends.
