With 10 years on a major label under his belt, Trace Adkins began a Toby Keith-like commercial breakthrough with the success of the massive single “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk.” Some songs on his new CD “Dangerous Man” are bald attempts to recapture the magic of that raunchy rocker. But both the title track and “Ladies Love Country Boys” fall short, hobbled by generic lyricism and manufactured machismo. But Adkins delivers with the hard-to-resist party anthem “Swing,” a stomping country-rocker chock full of shouted choruses and sly wordplay. The imposing country singer is also skillful with heartfelt balladry, and he applies his scorched-earth baritone to several affecting weepers, including the finely wrought “I Came Here to Live.”
