State prison officials announced Thursday that Iowa will no longer use trained attack dogs to remove uncooperative inmates from their cells.
The announcement comes one day after a human-rights group issued a report that listed Iowa among five states that use the strategy.
The Iowa Department of Corrections announced Thursday that it reviewed its dog-related prison cases and determined the practice will be discontinued immediately. Officials said the dogs will be used only in life-threatening situations.
