In 2006 it is a useless exercise to define “liberal” and “conservative” (“What it means to be liberal,” by Geoffrey Stone, Commentary, Oct. 10). Instead of trying to define these clunky old “isms,” we should be discussing why each of us cannot bring more common sense to every issue. Strict (read: knee-jerk) liberals and conservatives, if they still exist by any definition, will only continue to be involved in a deep discussion with themselves while civilization’s problems explode all around us.
