Libertyville, District 70
Several Highland Middle School students will have their poetry published this year. Poems by 7th-graders Craig Kym, “The Eagle Morning”; Elizabeth Ott, “The Winning Sensation”; and Jessie Silvis, “The Simple Things,” will be published in an anthology called “A Celebration of Young Poets.” In addition, students were selected to appear in another poetry book, “Excellence.” Poems by 8th-graders Thomas August, “Smile”; Matt Sweeny, “Musical Genius”; Scott Cooper, “Neil Armstrong”; William Steinhauser, “The Beach”; Matt Molitor, “Winter”; Nate Yordy, “My Head”; Eric Pulick, “John Paul II”; Erika Danckers, “Blossoming Spring”; Kelsey Hamilton, “A Day in the Snow”; and Teddy Amdur, “Johnny Appleseed,” will also be published in that book. Also selected were poems by 7th-graders Sandeep Balasubraminian, “Peace with the Self”; Maddie Ambrose, “Pink”; Becky Mueller, “Thoughts about School”; Jessie Silvis, “Nowhere”; Nina Andrejevic, “Christmas Morning”; Elizabeth Ott, “The Winning Sensation”; Ellen Sutter, “Wind”; Nathan Wolf, “Bike Ride”; Craig Kym, “The Eagle Morning”; Liza Boling, “The Life of the Park”; Meghan Maddock, “Mixed Feelings”; and Taylor Suydam, “Baseball.”
Vernon Hills, District 73
The school board has launched an online survey about the community’s perceptions of schools, with a focus on several key traits that have been found to be important in highly effective schools. Woodland, District 50
The district has dedicated the four athletic fields at Woodland Middle School “Morris Fields” in memory of former board president Thomas P. Morris Jr., who died last April.

Carmel Catholic High School, Mundelein
Carmel Catholic High School’s music department will present its annual Cabaret Concert and Dinner at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 in the auxiliary gymnasium at the school, 1 Carmel Pkwy. Advance box dinner tickets cost $10 and concert tickets are $3. For more information, call Kent Parry at 847-388-3348.
St. Gilbert Catholic School, Grayslake
The annual pancake breakfast and raffle will be held from 8a.m. to noon Nov. 5 in the school, 231 E. Belvidere Rd. Proceeds will support athletic programs, including the cost of uniforms, equipment, referees, gymnasium floor maintenance and a new scoreboard. Tickets are $5 for adults and high school students, $3.50 for students in kindergarten through 8th grade, and $2 for children under5. Call 847-223-2108.
Lake Forest, District 115

Libertyville, District 70
Rockland School will hold its first Rockland Road Rally at 4 p.m. Saturday at the school, 160 W. Rockland Rd. In this benefit parents will drive through town to collect items and points as part of their bag of clues. The two-hour event will end at 6 p.m. at a secret location for dinner, music and rally prizes. Call 847-362-3134.
Woodland, District 50
The school board will conduct two community stakeholder groups. The first will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Oct. 28 in Woodland Middle School, 7000 Washington St., Gurnee. The second will focus on a 3- to 5-year improvement plan from 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 11 at the school. Call 847-856-3607.
