Applause to Dawn Turner Trice for her column on the fence issue at South Loop Elementary School. School administrators, staff, students, parents and supporters have made Herculean strides to improve school safety and performance. It has been bewildering to see a small misguided group lose sight of the facts that children’s safety and learning are more important than aesthetics and personal interest.

The park is public land and the Chicago Park District and Chicago Public Schools have a duty to take reasonable measures to ensure that minimal safety measures exist. In this case, it means installing a fence that should have been there from the start.
