The Cubs and Jim Hendry again went with the over-the-hill-gang in selecting Lou Piniella (the name as published has been corrected here and in a subsequent reference in this text) over Joe Girardi, who would have brought to the table the same intensity, baseball knowledge and motivational skills as Piniella without his downside. Girardi would relate better to today’s players because he’s younger, has much better emotional self-control during the inevitable tough periods, has the potential to manage the Cubs for many years and isn’t looking to replace Joe Torre with the Yankees.
He also would have been $5 million cheaper than Piniella, money that could have been spent on players, who are a lot more important than the manager anyway.
