We were disappointed, but not surprised, by the Chicago Tribune’s endorsement of Mark Kirk over Dan Seals in the 10th Congressional District (Editorial, Oct. 19). We were surprised, however, that the paper continues to insist that Republican Kirk well reflects a district that has voted for the Democratic candidate in the past three presidential elections.

Kirk may be moderate by GOP standards on environmental issues, but he has voted with President Bush and Tom DeLay nearly 90 percent of the time.

As part of the Republican House leadership, he has been strangely silent on the Iraq war and the Mark Foley scandal.

The Tribune is correct in saying that Democrat Dan Seals is a very impressive challenger. Seals has an excellent grasp of the issues, and has campaigned tirelessly throughout the district.

The Tribune has paid a lot of attention to the races in the 6th and 8th Congressional Districts. We believe the Seals/Kirk contest in the 10th deserves more than a paragraph in the endorsement editorial.

We hope that this race gets more attention in the last days of the campaign; voters need to know more about the exceptional candidate that is Dan Seals.
