Bravo, Barbara Mahany! Her article on osteoporosis (“My fragile future,” Oct. 1) inspired me to get a neighbor to watch the kids, grab my husband and our bikes and ride along the lakefront for a couple of sunny hours. Improved bone health? We hope. But more immediately, I got incredible doses of fresh air, a heart I could feel pumping, sunshine, time with my husband and a not-so-subtle reminder of how great it is to be alive. Not bad for first thing on a Sunday morning. Thanks.

Friends and lovers

The question of whether men and women can have platonic friendships (“Platonic? Honest,” Oct. 1) has been around since Adam and Eve. It reminds me of a scene in the film “Carnal Knowledge,” in which Jack Nicholson is trying to pry Candice Bergen away from a relationship with Art Garfunkel. Jack thinks he’s persuaded her, and she’s supposed to tell Art the bad news. When Candice phones Jack later, she says she couldn’t do it, then poses the question, “Can’t we just be friends?” Jack answers, ” . . . I hope not!”

Water hazard

Regarding your “Braless Friday” item (Flashback 1969, Sept. 10), at least one of the girls in that demonstration received a citation from a Sanitary District official for “polluting” the Chicago River by throwing her bra into the water. It was issued pursuant to the 1899 Rivers and Harbors Act adopted to eliminate “obstructions to navigation” on U.S. waterways.
