Last week I saw what most people think is the best college football team in America–Ohio State. Saturday I saw what most people think is the worst football team in America–Temple. The ecstasy and the agony.
Speaking of which, welcome back John L. Smith and the Michigan State Spartans. Way back. At halftime it looked like Northwestern would seal the end of Smith’s coaching tenure in East Lansing. The Spartans responded with a record comeback from a 38-3 deficit to win 41-38. The Spartans are capable of anything on both ends of the spectrum, whether it’s a comeback or a collapse. That’s their history. Any team with Drew Stanton as its quarterback is dangerous, as the Wildcats found out.
Even after the great comeback, I’ll bet JLS is wondering why he ever left Louisville. Smith is an engaging guy and a great quote. It sounded like even he was at a loss for words after the game, giving credit to his players and staff and taking no questions.
“That’s it, I’m leaving,” he said. Curious.
I’m still not sure Ohio State is better than Michigan. What’s not to like about the Buckeyes? Other than average place-kicking, there is nothing I don’t like. I just like Michigan’s defense a little better. Everything else is a push. I guess we’ll find out. Maybe the cards will fall so they both can advance to the national title game and Wisconsin or even Iowa will go to the Rose Bowl.
As for Temple, there are better days ahead. Next fall when it becomes a full-fledged member of the MAC, it will be ready to win a few games. That should make former Owl Bill Cosby happy.
