Just about the only thing the Tribune got right in its endorsement of Tammy Duckworth is that she is a war hero (Editorial, Oct. 18). No one should doubt that for a second. Where we part company is on her qualifications to serve in Congress.
While lauding U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde for his principles, you include Duckworth in the same category despite the fact she has never held public office.
While the Tribune would welcome a change, the people in the 6th District have returned Hyde 15 times because he has been a very effective congressman who has excellent skills in diplomacy and debating.
If you have been watching Duckworth, you would realize she lacks both skills at the moment.
Republican state Sen. Peter Roskam has served this district, lives here and enjoys the support of the retiring congressman you praised so often.
To say any freshman congressperson is going to change the course of events in Washington is naive.
It may be in the city’s best interest to elect Duckworth, but the map clearly shows this district is not in the city.
