Process and theme dovetail on “Roots & Crowns,” as nearly every sound on the record has been electronically altered; images of transformation and rebirth recur throughout the disc’s 13 songs. But even though the formerly local quartet (half of which now lives out of state) logged long hours around computer screens assembling the crunchy beats and flickering sounds in the background, band-leader Tim Rutili’s soulful rasp and the prominent, resonant acoustic guitars up front make the album feel as down-home as a family gathering around a leafy bonfire.
