We get it. Paul Sullivan doesn’t like the Cardinals.

Or St. Louis. Or Missouri. Or southwest Illinois. Or most of the lower Midwest.

In a column last year about the old (and perfectly fine, if you ask me) Busch Stadium, he wasted several inches of newspaper space and many fine English words saying, basically, “I hate the Cardinals.” This week he does the same in advising Albert Pujols to be more like Sammy Sosa. What?

Only a Cubs fan would tell Pujols, the league’s best all-round player–and more important, a Cardinal–to be more like Sosa. So Albert’s a moody guy. Big deal. He’s also a team player, one who’s quick to thank and praise his mentors.

Sullivan points out that he failed to drive in a run in the World Series two years ago. True, but he did hit .333 in that awful Series, and his postseason totals, despite this current “slump,” are pretty amazing.

Sosa’s postseason totals? Not so hot. But that’s an unfair comparison as he lacks experience, having spent most of his career in Wrigley Field.

Hey, but at least Sammy smiles.

And please, until Pujols starts fighting his teammates in the dugout, refrain from calling him the next Barry Bonds. In exchange, I’ll once again spend more time reading “Ask Amy” than the Tribune sports section. The writing’s about as good, and the insights are far better.
