Dr. James E. Gearien, died of natural causes at his home Oct. 25, 2006. He was 87 years old. Dr. Gearien taught in the U.I.C. College of Pharmacy for 40 years. He was professor and head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy at the time of his retirement in the fall of 1988. A 1941 U.I.C pharmacy alumnus, Dr. Gearien also held Masters and Ph.D degrees from the University of Michigan. He was a member of Sigma Xi Scientific Honorary Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was active in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. He was the author of several textbooks and more than one hundred other publications and was a chairman of the Division of Medicinal Chemistry of the American Chemical Society and the Academy of Pharmaceutical Science. Dr. Gearien was born and grew up in central Illinois and lived in Park Ridge and Des Plaines for the past 49 years. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Helen Gray Gearien and their children, James Jr. and Anne (Mark) Mintzer. Services for Dr. James E. Gearien will be private. For info. contact G.L.
