As the election approaches, I should be ecstatic about the prospects for Democrats. Yes I am hopeful that these elections will bring a necessary change on issues ranging from the environment to Iraq to an equitable tax policy.

Yet my hope is tempered by the prospects of a Pyrrhic victory. If the victory is totally partisan, then we risk enduring the same I-and-Thou partisanship in the body politic.

Those of us who seek a new coalition of moderates from both parties will find such a partisan victory as ephemeral as the Republican victory of 1994. We do not seek to compromise our liberal principles as some have accused; we seek dialogue based upon respect for the values and good intentions behind opposing points of view.
