– Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe have split. “We are saddened to announce that Reese and Ryan have decided to formally separate,” publicist Nanci Ryder said in a statement issued Monday on behalf of the married couple.
– Riccardo Muti, who was to have conducted the Chicago Symphony concerts Nov. 9-10 at Symphony Center, has canceled because of severe influenza, according to a CSO spokeswoman. He will be replaced Nov. 10 by Ludovic Morlot, assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The replacement program is to be announced. The Nov. 9 concert is canceled. Muti would have been returning to the CSO podium after an absence of more than 30 years.
– The ugly divorce battle between Paul McCartney and Heather Mills McCartney was put on hold last weekend at the third birthday party for their daughter, Beatrice, Hello! magazine reported Monday. The two even spoke to one another during the event at a children’s play center in East Sussex, England.
– President Bush has tapped Emilio Estefan Jr., the Grammy-winning producer and husband of Gloria Estefan, to serve on the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Board, the White House said Monday.
