The invite is lovely, but when it comes to the appropriate dress, it’s pretty vague. Exactly what does one wear to certain events?

Black tie and black-tie optional events require either a long or short dress for women, and tuxes for men. At the “optional” events, men can get away with dressy, dark-colored suits.

Here’s a cheat sheet on fashion strategies for the kind of parties you’re most likely to be invited.

Cocktail

A dress is best, but not a long gown. Guys should wear something out of the ordinary. Colors are great.

On her: Your favorite little black dress with snazzy costume jewelry and some sexy, strappy sandals. Another option is a sheath dress, a jersey dress in a solid (not print), great-fitting pants or skirt with a dressy sweater or camisole with a bolero or shawl.

On him: A jacket, nice slacks, tie optional. He can also try a mock turtleneck with a jacket, or dressed-up jeans and a jacket.

Office party

Dress for the formality of the event, but be sure to wear something polished and tailored. Don’t show too much skin.

On her: What you normally wear to work, but kicked up a notch, not too sexy or too dull. A winter white suit instead of the gray one. Strappy, high-heeled sandals (right) instead of flats. Charmeuse blouse (right) instead of cotton.

A velvet fitted blazer instead of the crepe wool. Spice it up more, if you dare, with a lace-detailed, velvet or embroidered camisole underneath a jacket to create a softer and more feminine look.

On him: Same rules. What works for daytime is likely best for night too.

Casual and casual chic

Pants are fine for a casual party, but the “chic” part dictates you wear something pulled together. If words like “fun” or “festive” appear in the invitation, loosen up a bit.

On her: Finally, it’s OK to wear jeans to your run-of-the-mill holiday party. For a chic casual look, try skinny jeans, a colorful cashmere sweater, tall boots with your jeans tucked into them, a scarf and belt.

On him: A holiday sweater. A standard button-down. Best jeans or favorite khakis. But remember that RedEye’s Wolf Pack suggests men never fail in a jacket.

Even at the neighborhood block party.
