U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital, his staff said Thursday.

The two-term senator suffered a stroke last week, as he and his fellow Democrats were preparing to assume control of the upper chamber of Congress. They are set to take over in January with a 51-49 majority.

“Sen. Tim Johnson is recovering as expected from brain surgery and his brain pressures continue to be in the normal range,” Dr. Anthony Caputy, Chairman of the hospital’s Department of Neurosurgery, said in a written release.

“Sen. Johnson is sedated to allow his systems to rest and recover from the hemorrhage and we anticipate no further tests or procedures in the near future,” Dr. Vivek Deshmukh, a neurosurgeon, said in the same release. “This is expected to continue through the holidays.”
