During this season of giving, non-profit organizations will be extending their services of time, food, shelter and social programs to Illinois residents in need. In order to do this vital work now and throughout the year, non-profits largely depend on individual contributions. Those $20 and $50 checks add up. In fact individual contributions in Illinois added up to more than $7 billion in 2004, representing approximately 80 percent of total giving, according to a research update released by Donors Forum of Chicago.

A majority of Americans contribute annually to organizations they believe in and causes they care deeply about.

Please continue your generosity this holiday season.

With more than 31,000 charitable organizations in Illinois, there is ample opportunity to support the important work the non-profit community does on behalf of all of us.

If you’re not sure where to donate, think about what issues you care about and then find non-profits working on those issues. You can visit Web sites, such as NetworkForGood.org and GuideStar.org, to search for organizations that match your interests. Remember to ask for proof that your contribution is tax-deductible and for details about how your donation will be used.

Non-profits can also provide their financial documents, or you can search for them at www.IllinoisAttorneyGeneral.gov/charities.

Non-profit organizations need financial and volunteer support all year long.
