Your Dec. 20 editorial “Chortling over charters” brought charter schools to the fore. Mayor Richard M. Daley has done a yeoman job. Charters should be popping up all over Illinois. Only Chicago has enough clout to demand better education for the children.

In the collar counties and Downstate, charter advocates are stymied by the political muscle of the public education monopoly. The students in the remainder of the state suffer, and the governor and the General Assembly do not care.

Here is the solution: Take charter schools out of the suffocating hands of the local districts.

Establish a single, statewide Charter School District with state accreditation.

Let parents choose to send their children and their future to a charter school.
