Don’t ask Florida coach Urban Meyer for details about Boise State’s stunning comeback against Oklahoma.
“I hate to say this,” Meyer said. “I fell asleep and my wife kept hitting me. She said it was the greatest football game she ever saw.”
What, she never has seen a massive underdog pull off three miracle plays to beat a seven-time national champion?
This was a game that will supply memories for a lifetime. What it won’t do is push college football any closer to a playoff. Nor should it.
It’s ludicrous to say Boise State now deserves a shot at the title after a miracle victory over the nation’s seventh-ranked team. If Oklahoma had won, would the Sooners merit a shot at No. 1?
But, you might point out, this is different. Boise State is undefeated, a glistening 13-0. OK, but the Broncos did it against a schedule the NCAA rates as the nation’s 50th toughest.
And, no, you can’t put in a rule that states: Any Division I-A team that goes undefeated automatically deserves a shot at the title. Then where’s the incentive for Ohio State to schedule Texas? Why should Michigan play Notre Dame every season?
But we come to praise the Broncos, not to bury them.
They went 13-0 and thrilled millions of fans who didn’t need a nudge from their spouses to stay awake. Order a plaque. Get fitted for rings.
But don’t get carried away.
