Randy Johnson’s agents started talks with the Diamondbacks for a contract extension that would allow Arizona to acquire the Big Unit from the Yankees.
Arizona and New York reached a tentative agreement on a 4-for-1 trade Thursday, and the Diamondbacks were granted a 72-hour window to negotiate with Johnson. The window closes at 4 p.m. Sunday.
– The Mets and versatile reserve David Newhan agreed to a one-year contract. The Cubs had invited Newhan to spring training, he said.
– The Rangers and utilityman Jerry Hairston Jr. agreed to a one-year deal. He was acquired from the Cubs last season.
– Former Giants manager Felipe Alou rejoined the team as a special assistant to general manager Brian Sabean.
– The Mariners agreed with former Braves closer Chris Reitsma, 29, on a $2.05 million, one-year contract to become their top setup man.
