A RedEye sports reader responds to comments by chicagosports.com writer and Five on Five contributor Adam Caldarelli:
Dear Adam,
I noticed from reading RedEye toward the end of last year that you are a big fan of football but dislike soccer and enjoy ridiculing it. I would like to give you the perspective of a European (from London) living in Chicago, on this issue. Soccer (the real football) is regarded around the world as the “beautiful game,” whereas American football is a complete irrelevance almost anywhere outside of this country.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but labeling “soccer” boring is really quite astounding coming from someone whose idea of a great sport is one [whose] players spend around 90 percent of a total of about three very long hours standing around doing nothing. It would appear that 10 seconds of real action, at one time, in American football is something to get excited about. How unfortunate for you.
