Boston Herald media writer Jessica Heslam has a story today about the lengths presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, the former Republican governor of Massachusetts, is going to in order to remake his image to appeal to the conservative activists whose support will be crucial if he is to win the Republican nomination next year.
As the story notes, Romney has some work to do since in the past he has supported both gay rights and abortion. Which explains the photo illustration that ran with the story, a very amusing Romney action-figure doll whose features include that it’s “programmed to talk out both sides of mouth.”Says Heslam:
But his most important challenge is positioning himself as a true conservative in the field and that makes for some fast talking on gay rights and abortion.
“Romney has redefined, repositioned himself as a staunch conservative,” said Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia. “It may or may not be true. You often wonder what these people really believe, if anything.”
Madden defended Romney’s positions on abortion and gay marriage, saying his abortion views have evolved and that he’s always been for traditional marriage.
But Sabato said, “He is coming out as a champion of the pro-life cause and the anti-gay marriage cause. That’s obviously a reversal from 1994 – no matter what he says.”
We can’t help but wonder what features action figures of senators John McCain, Barack Obama and Hillaryy Clinton would have.
