Robert Hughes didn’t need to get the news about Walker from Notre Dame coaches. “I heard about it as soon as they did,” said Hughes, the Hubbard High School running back who ranks among the nation’s best uncommitted football recruits. Hughes will announce his “hardest decision” on Jan. 23, whether he will attend Illinois or Notre Dame. . Like most elite skill-position players, Hughes hopes to play extensively as a freshman. He planned to announce his plans on Tuesday, but Hubbard has early dismissal that day and Hughes wants his fellow students to be able to attend the 6 p.m. news conference. “It’s real close,” he said of the battle between the Illini and Irish. “The scale isn’t tipping either way right now.”
