Cook County Board President Todd Stroger’s proposal for 17 percent across-the-board budget cuts by all county departments equally is the easy way out, the fast and dirty approach to reducing spending (Metro, Jan. 3).
Demanding arbitrary, equal cutbacks is the thoughtless method of budget reduction. The rational way is for the Cook County Board and its president to do some actual work. They should be objectively assessing county functions and services and identifying where the most budget money can be chopped with the least adverse effect on operations vital to the citizens whom the board is supposed to represent. But the key word, of course, is “objectively,” which does not seem to be in their political lexicon.
