What’s all the fuss about who Mike Ditka is pulling for on Sunday? Who cares? People in this town made him out to be an icon when all he ever cared about was himself.

What did he accomplish with the Bears? He won one Super Bowl with the youngest team in the league at the time and never made it back. Was he a great coach or the beneficiary of great talent? I vote for the latter.

“Da Bears” made him into the caricature he is today. It’s a shame the fans in this town who idolize him aren’t smart enough to realize the Bears would have won with any coach in 1985. If they had a good coach, they wouldn’t be hoping for their first Super Bowl in 21 years now.

If Rick Morrissey (Tribune, Jan. 17) is so worried about Ditka pulling for the Bears on Sunday, he should make him an offer he can’t refuse–money.
