There is something common to us all, an inherent quality that is evident in its daily display by everyone, everywhere. It is as ordinary as it is exceptional; as conditional as it is absolute.
It neither negates individual distinction or cultural definition, nor does it demand a generic expression to be observed.
It is the basic concept of shared likeness, that core element of being that identifies what it means “to be human.”
It is the fundamental truth of a universal humanity that will always endure despite our differences and always prevail beyond our prejudices.
This year, beyond the desire to shed more pounds and earn more dollars, we might all consider taking a resolution on behalf of that truth.
The outcome will prove far more rewarding than the satisfaction derived from what we can wear or will buy.
Let us resolve to fully recognize, acknowledge and affirm our shared likeness and discover the real value of our humanity–a value worth protecting, preserving and promoting everywhere in the world.
We need not purchase memberships to health clubs or work 70-hour workweeks to make this happen.
All we have to do is look at each other.
Not past or through.
But at.
We will never clear the cataracts of disparaging indoctrinations unless we chose to see our humanity in the eyes of others.
The weight and cost of not doing so is not measured by scales or account balances but, rather, by hatred and bloodshed.
Hope you see me in this new year.
I’ll be looking for you.
