Changing the world seems such a daunting task sometimes. Here at the Magazine, we hope to work with readers to take baby steps toward a brighter future. Perhaps we have been inspired by the bleakness of winter-and the rather grim topic of this week’s cover story, “Chicago’s deadly decade,” but our sentiment is genuine and we hope that it will reach full bloom this summer. We’re planning an issue on what can be done, a day at a time and for no money, to improve the world.

We intend to feature your recommendations, which you can e-mail to us at tribmag@tribune.com. The idea is that altruism takes many forms, and we want to highlight something someone has done to improve the lives of others-small steps like picking up the trash strewn in a park, bringing plants to a shelter for battered women or taking an elderly person’s dog to the vet.

You can nominate someone you admire-and even yourself-but we are looking for acts of compassion that can be done in a few minutes or a day and do not require a cash donation. We have nothing against donating to the many wonderful charities of your choice, but we’re hoping to highlight examples of compassion or ingenuity that can be accomplished by anyone.
