Steve Chapman’s column “Obama’s quest for the presidency and the pertinent precedents” (Commentary, Jan. 18) contained a grievous and contemptible insult. Chapman asserts that U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) “has a name on loan from Al Qaeda.” This is not only ridiculous and childish; it impugns Obama’s patriotism. Playing linguistic games with Obama’s name may be cute on an elementary school playground, but to imply that Obama is somehow associated with or has sympathy for terrorists is beneath the editorial standards of the Chicago Tribune. The Tribune and Chapman owe our senator an apology.
