Birth control pills sometimes fail, but setting limits on how often that could happen would put newer, low-dose contraceptives off-limits to women, federal health advisers said Wednesday. Allowing less effective pills can increase the options for women and their doctors, said the acting chairman of FDA’s reproductive health drugs advisory committee.

Ethics charges filed against prosecutor

The North Carolina bar lodged new and more serious ethics charges Wednesday against the district attorney in the Duke lacrosse case, accusing him of withholding evidence from the defense and lying to both to the court and bar investigators. Mike Nifong–who withdrew from the case earlier this month–could be disbarred if convicted.

Sting led to uranium find

Republic of Georgia authorities, aided by the CIA, set up a sting operation last summer that led to the arrest of a Russian man who tried to sell a small amount of nuclear-bomb grade uranium in a plastic bag in his jacket pocket, officials said. The operation represents one of the most serious cases of smuggling of nuclear material in recent years, officials said.

Soggy dogs waiting outside a downtown Olympia pub inspired Washington state Sen. Ken Jacobsen to propose a way to get them in from the cold and rain. The Seattle Democrat’s bill would allow bars and restaurants with liquor licenses to welcome dogs, as long as they accompany their owners and remain well-behaved and leashed. Establishments wouldn’t be required to allow dogs, except for service animals.
