Students at Lake Forest Academy recently participated in the “We the People” competition at Hamburger University in Oak Brook. The group placed second in the state behind Maine South High School. LIBERTYVILLE/VERNON HILLS

The Board of Education recently hired two athletic directors. Briant Kelly and Brian McDonald will be the athletic directors for Libertyville High School and Vernon Hills High School, respectively. They will begin their positions on July 1 following the retirements of current athletic directors Tim Albers of Libertyville and Al Janulis of Vernon Hills. For information, call 847-327-7186

Students participating in the Feasts for Beasts fundraiser at Libertyville High School collected 12,082 cans and bags of pet food and $1,560 to benefit Save-A-Pet, a no-kill shelter in Grayslake, and the Flint Creek Animal Rehabilitation Center in Barrington.

LINCOLNSHIRE, DISTRICT 103

The parenting program “Parenting with Love and Logic” will be presented from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 15 in Wright Junior High School, 1370 Riverwoods Rd. District 103 staff members will lead a session centered on practical solutions to everyday issues. Admission is free. The Board of Education recently received a $1,500 grant from Target in support of early literacy programs for English as a Second Language students.

VERNON HILLS, DISTRICT 73

Parents of next school year’s Hawthorn kindergartners are invited to an information night at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 in the gym at Middle School South, 201 Hawthorn Pkwy. The meeting will offer parents information about the district’s schools and programs, including Elementary South, Elementary North, Townline and Aspen, as well as the Dual Language (Spanish/English) Program. Kindergarten registration packets will also be available. Hawthorn’s 2007-08 kindergarten class is open to children who will turn 5 years old on or before Sept. 1.
