E. Norman “Bud” Staub, age 90, former Chairman and CEO of the Northern Trust Company, passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, in Glenview, IL surrounded by his family. He formerly lived in Glencoe, Winnetka, Lake Forest and Naples, FL. Born on March 13, 1916 to Walter Adolph and Ida Charlotte, nee Flury, Staub, he grew up in Short Hills, NJ and graduated from The Peddie School, Princeton University and Harvard Business School. He began his career in 1939 as a Junior Accountant with Lybrand Ross Brothers and Montgomery in Boston, MA and later became Treasurer of the National Research Corporation in Cambridge, MA, one of the first high-tech companies started with venture capital. In 1953, he came to Chicago and began his career at The Northern Trust Company as Assistant Manager in the Credit Department. Over the course of the next 25 years, he built a reputation not only for his business acumen, but for his passionate interest in people, his gentle nature, his generosity of spirit, and his wonderful sense of humor. He became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the bank in 1978, the first non-family member to hold that position since its founding by the Byron L. Smith family in 1889. He retired as a Director in 1985. In addition to his role at the Northern Trust, Bud was also a respected leader in the larger Chicago business and civic communities. He served on the boards of numerous companies and was a tireless volunteer and fundraiser for countless organizations near and dear to his heart, most notably the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Life Trustee and former President and CEO of the Orchestral Association) and the Chicago Botanic Garden (Life Director). He was also a Life Trustee of Northwestern University, the Museum of Science and Industry, and Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center. Outside the professional arena, Bud’s interests were broad and varied. He was a consummate gourmet chef and baker, a passionate gardener, a dedicated history/geo-graphy buff, a classical music lover and a renowned world traveler. He made 5-star Sunday evening meals, grew orchids, camellias and plants from seed in his greenhouse, and remembered every detail from all of his many trips, ranging from China to Antarctica. More than any of these accomplishments, Bud’s greatest love was for his family. He was the adoring husband and partner for 66 years of Mary Ann Dilley Staub, who predeceased him on Nov. 23, 2006. Bud was the devoted father of Susan Dilley Staub (Bradley K. Joseph, M.D.), Sandra S. Bradbury and Stephen R. Staub (Debbie Boscoe); proud grandfather of Scott Bradbury (Mary) and Allison Bradbury Augsburger (Joshua); and great-grandfather of Andrew Layne Augsburger. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 21, 2007 at the Chicago Botanic Garden, Glencoe, IL.
