West Virginia native Ferree set out to Los Angeles to try acting, only to end up back East tending bar. He was befriended by Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty, who encouraged him to record his quirky songs. “Leaving the Nest” is another sort of acting job, with Ferree adopting the British rock dandyisms of Marc Bolan and Ray Davies backed by neo-country instruments: acoustic guitar, fiddles, harmonica. He whistles instead of taking a guitar solo in at least two songs, and his fey vocals brim with underhanded intelligence, by turns whimsical, menacing and erotic.
