Rodger Salzman, a loving loyal friend to his wife, Jeanne; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Debbie; grandson, Jack; and extended family, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Claridge Health Care Center, where he received special care in Lake Bluff, IL, on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007. Born in Kingston, NY, on Aug. 30, 1919 to Olga Salzman, he graduated from Kingston High and attended Springfield Massachusetts College for Men. Studying to be a YMCA director, he lived on the International wing and played basketball for the college. He was a Veteran of the Army Air Corps, serving in WWII, after which he began a career in insurance sales, which he continued until he was 82 years old. As an active Christian, he was a member of the Deerfield Presbyterian Church. His major interest was his church activities as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, various committees, Men’s Breakfast Bible Study, Round Table, the St. Andrew’s Group, and prayer groups, as well as being a member of the Gideons. Rodger was also active in the American Legion in Lake Forest, and in Scouting, serving as Scout Master as well as a Boy Scout District Commissioner in Lake County. He will be remembered by his loving family, many friends and neighbors, as a loyal family member and friend, a sports fan, a creative chef, and a masterful story teller. Rodger was preceded in death by his loving grandparents, mother, aunts and uncles. A Memorial Service for Rodger provided by Pastors Eshleman and Heil will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Deerfield, 824 Waukegan Rd., Deerfield, IL 60015. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Deerfield or to the Claridge Healthcare Center, 700 Jenkisson Rd., Lake Bluff, IL 60044.
