Woods believes in Beckham

The world’s No. 1 golfer follows American football, basketball or baseball, but Tiger Woods believes David Beckham’s move to the L.A. Galaxy will have an impact on the game in the U.S.

“The (NFL’s) Rams and the Raiders moved out. Now we’re looking for something else, and I think with David’s star power there, I think it will bring another notch and another thing for all of us in Southern California to come out and watch,” Woods said Wednesday, a day before the start of the Dubai Desert Classic.

Big sendoff

Yankee Stadium is going out with an All-Star salute. The beloved old ballpark will host the 79th major-league All-Star game on July 15, 2008, the final season before the New York Yankees move into a new stadium being built across the street in the Bronx.

Big and tall

The man believed to be the tallest player in pro basketball history is now a member of the American Basketball Association’s Maryland Nighthawks. He’s 7-foot-9, 370-pound Sun Ming Ming of China, and he was officially introduced Wednesday. The 23-year-old–who complained the XXXXXXL sweat shirt the team gave him was too small–was asked what his goals are. “I hope,” Sun said, “I make the NBA some day.”

Hoosiers knock off Wisconsin

A.J. Ratliff scored 18 of his season-high 20 points in the second half and Indiana held off No. 2 Wisconsin 71-66 on Wednesday night, ending the Badgers’ 17-game winning streak. Wisconsin’s Alando Tucker’s rebound basket tied the game at 59. But Ratliff scored six of Indiana’s next eight points, including two free throws with a minute to go to for a 70-66 lead.
