“EDWARD SCISSORHANDS”
(star)(star)(star)(star)
7 p.m., ENCI
Edward (Johnny Depp) could be an ordinary boy except for one thing: springing from his wrists are 10-inch-long, razor-sharp metal blades. As filmmaker Tim Burton dreams him and Depp plays him, he’s a most original fantasy creation, an icon of tenderness and artistic alienation in a modern fairy tale about a bewildered young manufactured boy, complete except for makeshift hands, pulled from Gothic horror-house into the screamingly pastel candyland of suburbia. With Winona Ryder playing the girl Edward sadly must try to keep his hands away from. MPAA rating: PG-13.

In this goofy movie, director-writer Keenen Ivory Wayans asks us to believe that actor-writers Marlon and Shawn Wayans, as two African-American FBI agents, could disguise themselves as famous high society blond sisters at a posh Hamptons bash and fool everybody, including the sisters’ best buddies. Amazingly they succeed. The movie doesn’t.
