Michael Irvin has lost his ESPN gig. The network decided not to exercise an option in Irvin’s contract, it was confirmed Saturday.
“It’s fine,” Irvin said Saturday night. “These are exciting times for me and my family. There are a lot of opportunities to explore.”
– Mario Matt of Austria won the slalom title at the world championships in Are, Sweden, and Bode Miller strained his knee on the first run and was declared out of Sunday’s team event. Miller failed to win a medal in his second straight major championship.
– Michael Phelps broke his own world record in the 200-meter butterfly at the Missouri Grand Prix race, finishing in 1 minute 53.71 seconds and winning the race by nearly six seconds.
– American Xavier Carter was disqualified after winning the 400 meters at the Norwich Union indoor meet in Birmingham, England. Officials said Carter stepped out of his lane. Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia set a world record for the indoor 2,000 meters of 4:49.99, beating Haile Gebrselassie’s mark of 4:52.86.
– Amelie Mauresmo beat Anna Chakvetadze 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to gain the final of the Diamond Games tournament in Antwerp, Belgium. Mauresmo will face Kim Clijsters, who beat Tatiana Golovin 6-4, 6-3.
– The Wolves outshot the Aeros 32-29 but lost 4-1 in Houston.
– Frank Broyles, 82, who has spent nearly 50 years as football coach and athletic director at Arkansas, will retire at the end of the year.
