Ellen DeGeneres’ opening monologue was received far more warmly than Jon Stewart’s stinging remarks last year. DeGeneres, who wore a comfy-looking burgundy velvet suit and white shoes, was much gentler. She offered advice to winners on how to yank on heartstrings during their acceptance speeches. “Tell them you lived in your car; they love that,” she said.

DeGeneres’ light approach, complete with a bevy of gospel singers and silly interviews in the audience, made a long night more enjoyable.
