Now there’s an option for those readers who are interested in Barack Obama but don’t want to invest $25 plus the time it takes to read his latest book, which weighs in at 364 pages.

It’s a kind of CliffsNotes version of the life and times of Illinois’ junior senator, culled from dozens of press clippings and a thorough read of both of Obama’s self-penned tomes.

“Hopes and Dreams: The Story of Barack Obama” is on the shelves now for $9.95. It’s tight on text and heavy on pictures. The author of the book, freelance writer Steve Dougherty, tells the Wall Street Journal he got paid $15,000 to turn the 20,000-word book around in two weeks’ time.

In publishing it, the independent press Black Dog & Leventhal is hoping to cash in on the current interest in Obama — a good portion of it generated by Obama’s own books.

Maybe that’s why the Democratic senator/presidential candidate couldn’t find time for an interview.
