Consumers can see a preview of fuel economy estimates for the 2008 model year under a new feature at www.fueleconomy.gov.

Estimates will decline for 2008 because the Environmental Protection Agency will use new tests to make the numbers closer to those attained in real-world driving.

The Web site compares estimates for 2007 and older models against the numbers derived according to the new method. Changes vary by model.

For example, combined city/highway mileage for the Toyota Prius hybrid would drop to 46 miles per gallon next year from 55 this year, and the Honda Civic Hybrid would fall to 42 from 50. The Toyota Camry 4-cylinder would drop to 24 from 27, and the Ford F-150 V-8 would decline by 1, to 15 m.p.g.
