Janet Burke of Elmhurst suggested in her Feb. 24 letter to the editor that since the University of Illinois is looking for a new mascot, it should create one called Illini Yuppie White Guy.
This would be a rather comical character whose portrayal would include khakis, a tucked-in polo shirt, Starbucks cup, Bluetooth earpiece, a bottle of Heineken and a variety of other props that Burke, I presume, believes are stereotypes of young white males. This is a splendid idea.
The problem is the university could not get away with it because a new cottage industry of women and minority groups would spend the next 30 or 40 years protesting Illini Yuppie White Guy as being exclusive of their various groups.
What a shame.
