The Joffrey Ballet says it already has reached the $19 million mark in its efforts to raise $35 million to move into the new Joffrey Tower under construction at State and Randolph Streets.
During a hard-hat preview Wednesday, the troupe announced details of its capital campaign and showed off the raw space that will eventually house seven studios, educational facilities, costume shops, offices, showers, lockers, a ground-floor box office and a 144-seat performance venue.
The new digs, expected to be ready early next year, will occupy 2 1/2 floors and 45,000 square feet, nearly double the area currently housing the company in two buildings.
A “green roof” with plants and trees will rest atop the Joffrey’s portion of the building.
The $35 million campaign will cover about $21 million in building costs and $14 million to refurbish sets and other elements of “The Nutcracker” and establish a permanent endowment.
