Advocate Lutheran General Hospital’s Fitness Center is soliciting donations for its Bucks for Bunnies program, which provides pediatric patients with stuffed animals delivered on Easter weekend. Fundraisers
Battle of the Badges, a lacrosse game between the New York City Fire and Police Departments, will begin at noon Sunday before the Chicago Shamrox game at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates. Five dollars of every ticket sold to fans who mention “Battle of the Badges” when ordering will be donated to the New York Police & Fire Widows’ & Children’s Fund. The Bacon Brothers, featuring actor Kevin Bacon, will perform a benefit concert for McHenry County Public Action to Deliver Shelter at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Raue Center for the Arts, 26 N. The Literacy Connection will hold its 10th annual Trivia Bee fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 14 in the Heritage Ballroom at the Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way. Volunteers
The McHenry County Conservation District is seeking volunteers to help lead weekday environmental education field trips for schoolchildren. Volunteers should be 14 or older, like the outdoors and be capable of walking unpaved trails. Training sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 30 in the Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Rd., Crystal Lake, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 4 in the Living Land Education Center, 716 E. Nominations will be accepted through April 1 for Schaumburg’s volunteer of the year, volunteer organization of the year and youth individual volunteer. Nominees may represent social, civic, religious, community, school and medical organizations. For-profit and political organizations are excluded. Awards will be presented April 17. The Literacy Connection will hold a free orientation session for adult literacy tutors from 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 2 in Associated Bank’s Community Room, 2001 Larkin Ave., Elgin. Training workshops will follow from 6 to 8:45 p.m. April 4, 9, 12, 23, 25 and 30. Once trained, tutors will be matched with a student for tutoring an hour or two a week at a time and location of their choosing. Making a difference
The Friends of the Dundee Township Public Library recently donated $4,500 to the library’s children’s department for an innovative reading system called Peek-a-Book, a kiosk with an interactive touch screen and headsets that displays six different book talks that are rotated weekly.
Prospect High School recently raised more than $2,300 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through its 13th annual all-school Pennies for Patients campaign.
Six senior citizens age 90 and older were recognized this week for their volunteer work by the Community Nutrition Network site at the Schaumburg Barn. The network provides low-cost meals for seniors and the disabled in Schaumburg Township. The recognized seniors are: Dorothy Ingram, Edward Petka, Anne Geisler, Helen Nowak, Helen Jurewicz and Alice Moore.
