LIBERTYVILLE, DISTRICT 128
*Students, parents, staff and the community recently raised more than $49,000 for the Free the Children’s Adopt-a-Village Project. The goal of the project, sponsored by the First Class Program, was to raise $6,000 to build a school in Kenya for 60 children. The additional funds will pay for lunches, school supplies for at least 10 years, a teacher’s house, a community well, a washroom, a water system, textbooks, health kits, sewing machines and a goat or a cow for each pupil’s family. The school will be named after Frank Underbrink, a social studies teacher who taught in Libertyville and Vernon Hills.
LINCOLNSHIRE, DISTRICT 103
*Zachary Blumenfeld, an 8th grade pupil at Wright Junior High School, recently won the Illinois State Geographic Bee. In 2004 he placed 6th, in 2005 he received 3rd place, and last year he earned 2nd place. Zachary will represent Illinois at the National Geographic Bee in Washington in late May.
