Roger Federer won his 500th career match Friday in the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters, and Rafael Nadal extended his clay-court winning streak to 65. Nadal beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 6-3. Federer defeated David Ferrer 6-4, 6-0. In Saturday’s semifinals, the top-ranked Federer will play two-time champion Juan Carlos Ferrero. The second-seeded Nadal will play Tomas Berdych.
*The director of the Tour de France is asking cycling teams to exclude riders who were implicated in the Spanish doping investigation. At the 2006 Tour, a urine sample from champion Floyd Landis was found to contain elevated testosterone to epitestosterone levels. He faces a two-year ban and would be the first Tour rider to be stripped of the title if the doping allegations are upheld. More than 50 cyclists were implicated in the Spanish probe before the 2006 Tour started.
*Stanford suspended men’s swim coach Skip Kenney for two months without pay following an investigation into allegations that he erased the names and records of five former swimmers from team publications. … A plan to bring professional soccer back to San Jose State failed after a developer and campus officials could not agree about how much the school should be paid.
