Standard “hazing” of rookies typically includes veterans demanding that new players stand up during a meal at training camp and sing their school fight songs.
Bears veterans may ask tight end and first-round pick Greg Olsen to sing a different selection from his greatest hits.
Olsen, under the moniker “G-Reg,” was a member of a group of Miami football players who got together under the name “7th Floor Crew” and recorded a lewd rap song known by that name, referring to the seventh floor of Miami’s Mahoney Residential College.
“As a freshman, a few of my friends and I recorded a song that was written for us,” Olsen said. “It was an immature mistake on my part, and I certainly recognize it was wrong. I am not proud of what we did and [I] have become a more mature person over the past three years.”
The song, made in 2004, details sexual acts and boasts, including demeaning references to women.
The Bears had nothing to say to Olsen about it, he said.
“That was something that was a long time ago, ” Olsen said. “Nothing ever really came of it. It was a stupid thing back in college that happened, and we kind of all moved on from that.”
The song was denounced by the Miami administration, including athletic director Paul Dee, who said the content was “unfortunate, inappropriate and demeaning” and “does not reflect the values of the university or the athletic department.”
