Indians starter C.C. Sabathia rebounded nicely after falling behind 3-0 on three homers in the top of the first. He held the Blue Jays to one hit over the next five innings, retiring 16 of the final 17. He walked none and struck out nine in six innings of a 12-4 win.

Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter, sidelined since Opening Day (elbow), threw about 60 pitches in three simulated innings against teammates on Tuesday. “We’ll see what happens [Wednesday],” he said. “If everything’s perfect, we’ll go from there.”

The NL’s top hitter, Matt Holliday, stayed on his roll, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs in the Rockies’ 9-7 win over the Giants. His solo homer in the third tied it 3-3 and his bases-clearing double put the Rockies up 8-3 in the fourth. His average stands at .395.

THREE DOWN

Closer Jonathan Papelbon suffered his first blown save, yielding a two-run homer to the A’s Travis Buck in the ninth inning of the Red Sox’s 5-4, 10-inning loss. He gave up three hits Tuesday after giving up two hits and no runs in his previous 9 1/3 innings.

Devil Rays starter Edwin Jackson fell to 0-4, yielding six runs — four earned — and five hits in 1 1/3 innings in a 9-1 loss to the Twins. He has given up 11 runs over 4 1/3 innings in two losses to the Twins this year. The two unearned runs scored on his throwing error.

Mark Redman was booed off the field after another poor start for the Braves, who fell 6-4 to the Phillies. He was knocked out during a four-run second and might be in danger of losing his spot in the rotation. His ERA climbed to 10.62 in five starts.
